Hundreds Crowd Borders
for First Harry Potter
Tom Duggan

Hundreds of people crowded Borders Book Store at the Loop in Methuen last night for the release of Harry Potter, "The Half Blooded Prince". By 11pm the store had so little room for the number of people coming in, that customers sat on the floor with their children playing board games, reading books and coloring pictures because there was no place to move.

Children (and people old enough to know better) dressed in wild costumes, wizard hats, painted faces, and spoke to each other with British accents and waited...and waited...and waited....until their numbers were called.

When the store clerk finally announced that ticket numbers one-through-ten could line up, a cheer came over the store as children could barely contain their excitement.

The very first book was purchased by Antony Batis (above) of Lawrence who drew further cheers from the crowd as he walked away from the counter reading page one.

It was only minutes after midnight when Batis purchased his copy but those unfortunate enough to get a high number (our reporter had 437) had to wait until after 1:30am to satisfy the curiosity and wonder of eager children. Though some adults purchasing the book admitted they were buying it for themselves.

Surprisingly (at least to me) North Andover's very own State Representative David Torrisi (D), was on hand to get his precious copy of "The Half Blodded Prince" when ticket numbers 100-150 were called.

For the record, Torissi wasn't wearing a purple wizards costume.
