Board member, Israel Reyes, the twice failed
candidate for District "D" City Council
(and failed candidate for State Rep. against Jose
Santiago) is expected to announce his candidacy
for City Council again on Saturday morning. Reyes
is holding a "press conference" at the
Everett Mill Deli on Union Street at 11:00 AM on
March 8, 2003.
Sources close to Reyes say he is running "at
large" challenging Council President Marcos
Devers, Nunzio DiMarca and Michael Sweeney. Reyes
is expected to focus his political attention on
DiMarca and Sweeney in his Saturday speech.
Reyes tried to misdirect Paying Attention! by
making it look as though he was running against
Nick Kolofoles for District "D" in a
bid to take advantage of the new redistricting
plan on Tower Hill. "District "D"
which was purposely Gerrymandered by the U.S.
Justice Department in order to make it easier for
an Hispanic to win the seat. Reyes is Puerto
Rican, incumbent Nick Kolofoles is not.
Current Councilor Nick Kolofoles, who is also
president of the Tower Hill Neighborhood
Association is in his first term as the District
"D" Councilor on Tower Hill and is
widely popular with residents on the Hill. A bid
against Kolofoles would be fatal for Reyes, but
an at-large bid might prove more fruitful with
DiMarca weak in South Lawrence.
Reyes is the consummate insider candidate. This
year he is being propped up to run by
special-interest forces (such as Central
Catholic, Atty. Morris, and pro-water
privitization sell outs.) He support Centrals
pilfering of FEMA land and Water Privitization,
though the majority of Lawrence voters oppose it.
He also enjoys support from fellow planning board
member Les Bernal and State Rep Barry Finegold,
who are feverishly working behind the scenes to
help Reyes get elected.
Reyes was defeated by
Stae Rep. Jose Santiago after making a
controversial stand (on WCCM's Hot Line)
supporting partial birth abortion (the procedure
of killing a full term, 9 month old baby as it is
exiting the womb), later denying he ever
supported the stand and then ultimately admitting
he did, but did not know what partial birth
abortion was.

Paying Attention
It's sad,
really. Israel Reyes is a candidate for State
Representative. He wants to represent Lawrence
voters at the state house. But he has so many
accomplished lies on his political resume that Al
Gore and Bill Clinton would gush with envy!
