Hispanic Restaurant Made to Fight or License

The licensing board will meet on Thursday June 27th to hear the request of a business owner who wants to open a Spanish restaurant on Common Street. But the restaurant has not received a warm welcome from some of our city fathers. Several comments were made at the last Licensing board meeting that "there are already too many Spanish restaurants in the City of Lawrence."

This clearly smacks of racism to me when you consider the fact that private business owners have the right to operate any kind of restaurant they want in a free country and it seems they are being denied because of the fact that it is a Spanish restaurant. For the Licensing board to deny this license is a violation of the United States Constitution and I don’t think we should stand for it.

I plan on speaking in favor of the new restaurant at that meeting on the 27th because private enterprise should dictate how many is too many Spanish restaurants in this city. If there are enough patrons in this city for the restaurant to accommodate, given the numerous other Spanish businesses we have located in Lawrence, then it is the free market system which will dictate the clubs failure or success.

I urge every person reading Rumbo to attend the meeting and express your outrage at the possibility that this restaurant will be denied a license for any reason other than the lack of meeting legal requirements.

The meeting will be held at City Hall at 6.30 pm. It is only through the voice of the people who pay attention in the community that we will end this foolishness and support capitalism in the private sector. Here is a potential tax payer who is willing to brave the odds and start a business in our city and what are they being told? No thank you? Shame on anyone who stands in the way of any business who wants to locate in Lawrence.

Is there any wonder why we have a shrinking tax base while other communities are thriving?
