You have the right Get An Abortion
But You don’t have the right to Make the Rest of Us Pay For it!

Abortion is a controversial and emotional issue facing this nation and opposing forces will never agree on a middle ground as to the merits of legalization. But there is another issue in the abortion debate that can and must be resolved by our government. On his first day as President, George Bush has taken the first step towards resolving that issue. Bush has signed an executive order prohibiting federal money from being used to fund over seas abortions. Most people never knew we the government was using our tax money to fund and promote abortions in other countries until Bush put a stop to it. On his first day as my new president, George Bush set the tone of his new administration by drawing a line in the sand on the abortion debate.

He told the American public when he announced this executive order that he believes in cutting federal funding for abortions abroad "as well as within the United States." I say he is right, and his position should be embraced by pro life and anti life forces.

While this move by Bush may be seen as a victory for the pro life movement in America, it is really a victory for both sides of the abortion debate. Remember, it is the pro-abortion forces who say that the government should stay out of the abortion debate because it is a privacy issue. Following that logic, if the government must be prohibited from telling a woman what she can or cannot do with her own body, the government shouldn’t have to spend our tax money to fund it.

In the United States today, a woman has the privacy right to choose whether or not to have sex, have an abortion, and therefor should come up with the money on her own to pay for both should she get pregnant. The pro abortion forces argue that poor people who cannot afford to have an abortion will be unable to obtain one. And they are right. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, we are a capitalist country. We have constitutional right to choose our own destiny but we do not have a constitutional right to force other people to pay for those choices.

Remember that abortion is elective surgery. You wouldn’t advocate using federal dollars to pay for a woman’s breast implants or a nose job. Why has the federal government used our tax money to pay for a woman’s private choice to have an abortion?

I don’t mind paying taxes to help a mother who’s husband dies or abandons her (as long as she doesn’t continue to pop out more kids while she is collecting a check.) I have no problem with paying more taxes for the care and comfort of the elderly or the mentally retarded. But I have a big problem with using state or federal tax money to pay for the personal choice of a woman who chooses to have an abortion.

Is it fair that some women can’t afford to have an abortions and other women can? Of course it’s not fair. But life is not fair. It isn’t fair that some people can afford to eat steak and lobster while others eat Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, either. But, it is not and should not be the function of government to take the people’s tax money to try and make things fair. Because it cannot work, and it is un-American. As a capitalist country we function under one basic principal; those who have money can spend it as they choose, and those who do not have money must do without. Any attempt to change the economic balance between those who have and those who don’t, equates to government intrusion and redistribution of wealth. This is the basic tenant of communism. And it is dangerous.

It’s dangerous because it discourages the population from working harder to obtain more money and rise up from poverty on their own. It’s dangerous because it creates a class of people who are permanently dependent on government when they should be working toward self sufficiency. And it is dangerous because it allows irresponsible behavior to go without consequence.

You see, with rights come responsibilities. If a woman has the right to choose, she has to take the responsibility for the outcome of that choice. If she makes the personal choice to have sex knowing she cannot afford to raise a child or have an abortion, it is she who is responsible for the fate of that unborn child, not the rest of us.

You can’t have it both ways. Whether you are for or against the legalization of abortion, we shouldn’t be using tax dollars to fund it. And we certainly shouldn’t be sending our tax money to other countries so that they can promote and perform abortions with the money taken out of your paycheck every week.

Of course, the pro abortion forces want to use your tax dollars to pay for abortions because they are making millions on the abortion industry. The National Organization for Women and the National Abortion Reproductive Rights Action League make millions from government funded abortions. But they are inconsistent in their arguments between advocating the legalization of abortion and advocating that you must pay for it. Either the government has the right to be involved in a woman’s choice or they do not. Following the basic ideology of the pro-abortion forces, government must stop all state and federally funded elective surgery procedures.

When President Bush begins to systematically cut federal funding for abortions within the United States later this year, the abortion business will be up in arms. They will have a willing media to join them in attacking Bush as being cold and mean spirited because poor women will be denied the "right" to have an abortion."

When that happens, and it will, remember that a woman has the constitutional right to get an abortion, but she does not have the right to do so with your tax money.
