The Next Four Years
Lawrence Mayor Mike Sullivan

I want to thank the people of Lawrence for their vote of confidence last month. We need to make this next four years even more productive than the last. My transition team is made up of a various cross section of experts that will serve the city well.

During the next four years the priorities of my administrations will be:

Public safety: Our citizens need to feel safe in our city. Crime is down in every category in Lawrence but we need to continue the fight against lawlessness. Our battle against auto insurance fraud and street crimes is just bearing fruit now after several years. We need to continue the fight against underage drinking, noise disturbances and petty vandalism that drive people away from our city. I am committed along with Chief Romero to make this a safer place to work, live and to visit.

Education: Our children deserve a first class learning experience. The new Lawrence High School which will be opened next September will be the largest and most expensive high school ($110 million) in state’s history. Our children will have access to state of the art computer facilities, science labs and athletic facilities that will be the envy of every other municipality in our state. This school is coming in on time and on budget.

I want to make sure that when our children come through our school system that they are given every chance to succeed and to compete against those districts that have more wealth. Lawrence does not need to take a back seat to anyone.

Jobs: During the last four years we have been able to reduce the unemployment rate by a significant amount. We need to keep the momentum going. Mill buildings that have long been vacant or underutilized are being renovated and put back on the tax roles. Our Latino businesses are growing each and every year in the downtown area. We need to make Lawrence the true economic hub of the region. The best most effective social program in America is not a government handout but a job.

City Services: We will continue to invest in our future. A new water filtration plant to improve our drinking water, unprecedented capital spending on schools, parks, and roads is our top priority. The people of Lawrence deserve the best and that is what I intend to give them.

Communicate with City Council: Lawrence is lucky to have such a dedicated new Council that really cares about our quality of life. I intend to work more efficiently with them than in my prior term. We may not agree all the time but I know that we can work together to tackle our biggest problems. I want to make Lawrence a place where we can all be proud to say we live. I am committed to making this the best place to live in this area.
