Why I'm Running for Council At Large
Ken Willette, Methuen City Council

Hello, my name is Ken Willette, and I am running for re-election as your Councilor-At-Large.  The theme of my campaign is: “You know where I stand on the issues.”  I am proud of my record over the past two years.

You know where I stand on the issues of taxes. I have consistently voted against tax increases-both last year and this year. I fulfilled my promise of voting against tax increases, because many Methuen residents are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. They have not experienced pay raises; their jobs have been downsized or eliminated and their cost of living on many items has skyrocketed.

You know where I stand on the issue of identifying sex offenders living and working in our community.  I recommended the placement of detailed information on Level 3 Sex Offenders on Channel 8-our local government access channel.

The Level 3 Sex Offenders are the most dangerous sexual criminals in our community, and their photographs and addresses should be displayed on Channel 8 for the benefit of families and children.

You know where I stand on the issue of local government spending.  I voted against the last two town budgets because more cuts were necessary.  This year’s budget gimmicks will create a nearly $3 million hole in next year’s budget. The one-time gimmicks took money away from the intersection improvements greatly needed at Marston Corner-as promised by Brooks Pharmacy.  We also have pressing capital improvement projects that were not addressed in this year’s budget.

We should fix and upgrade intersection lights across the city.  We should replace outdated public safety equipment. We should tend to repair items at our schools. We can accomplish all of these community needs with the back taxes that will gradually be repaid by Malden Mills.  I believe that one-time revenues should only be used on capital improvement projects.

You know where I stand on the issue of education. We must deal with renovations at the high school.  We must have all of our background paperwork and architectural plans completed in order to be placed on the new school building assistance program list. The current administration missed a golden opportunity to receive 90% percent reimbursement from the state for renovations. This delay will cost Methuen millions of dollars in added costs.  I am committed to renovations at our flagship schools.

You know where I stand on the issue of accountability.  I will continue to fight to ensure that all elected officials are held accountable to the taxpayers.  I will always fight for high ethical standards.

I appreciate your vote on November 8th.
