Make a Difference VOLUNTEER!
Methuen
Councillor Kathleen Corey Rahme
10/03/06
Make
a Difference - Volunteer During my election bid in
2003, I promised to create the Methuen Youth Corps for
our young people in Methuen to have the opportunity to
participate in volunteer activities. Anyone who has ever
applied for a scholarship, sought entrance into a private
high school or applied for college knows one of the
questions always asked is about community service or
volunteerism. While that should be motivation enough to
join, I feel the act of volunteerism in and of itself is
a wonderful thing.
The Methuen Youth Corps is a unique organization in that
it does not have meetings. It does not collect dues and
participation is based on availability. That is, the
availability of the participant as well as community
service projects. As the founder of the Methuen Youth
Corps I have forged many partnerships throughout the City
of Methuen with both the city itself and various
not-for-profits. Since its inception in 2004, the Methuen
Youth Corps has worked with the Mayors office
during the annual city-wide clean-up days, the Methuen
Historical Society for various activities including the
Greycourt Gala, the Director of Veterans Services,
the Trauma Intervention Program, the Lawrence Viet Nam
Memorial, the Methuen DPW and the Elmwood Cemetery, the
100th Anniversary of the Searles Building, the annual
Methuen Santa Parade, and the Methuen Senior Center. We
have also worked with various Girl Scout and Boy Scout
Troops. The Methuen Youth Corps have cleaned up garbage,
placed flags on veterans graves, set up chairs,
handed out water at a road races, acted as ambassadors
for our city, edged hundreds of veterans bronze
markers and passed out candy at parades to name a few of
our many activities.
We are looking for new members. If you would like to join
the Methuen Youth Corps or if you are a not-for-profit
organization that needs help and would like to partner
with us, please contact me. My email is kcoreyrahme@
comcast.net or you can telephone me at (978)686-0008. I
have written numerous letters of reference on behalf of
our members and I am willing to continue to do that in
the future.
