Notre Dame High School
Changing Lives One Student at a Time

LAWRENCE - Notre Dame High School in Lawrence will hold an open house for prospective students on Sunday, October 15, 2006 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Notre Dame High School is located at the corner of Hampshire and Haverhill Streets in Lawrence (the old Saint Mary’s High School), where students attend classes four days per week with an extensive after school tutoring program. Students at Notre Dame work for local companies on the fifth day of the week as part of their internship program to help defray the cost of tuition.

Notre Dame provides education to low income students from around the Merrimack Valley and is a college preparatory school. The school has an average of 18 students per class and provides ample one-on-one instruction to students who need it.

Nearly all the funding for student tuition at Notre Dame comes directly from donations from the business community. Financial assistance is available to interested students considering next year’s freshman class.

“Sadly, most Catholic schools service middle to upper income students who are from families that can afford the tuition. The sisters of Notre Dame wanted to make that same quality of education available for low-income families,” said Jane Shawcross.

“Many of these kids will be the first in their families to even graduate high school, so it is very exciting to see them getting prepared for college. Notre Dame will give them the education and confidence they need to get there,” she added.

The school opened in 2004 with its first class of freshmen. With a new freshman class coming in each year since, by next year the school is expected to be at full capacity. The school transports students to and from work each day.

Tuition for students is mainly funded by corporate contributions and through the Corporate Internship Program. Tuition for a team of four students is $21,500, with the majority of that paid for by the corporate sponsor.

The average family contribution to a child’s tuition is approximately $1,000, with financial assistance and corporate sponsorship available to pay the rest. The salaries earned by the students cover 70% of the cost of tuition at the coeducational, Catholic, college preparatory school.

All those interested in applying to NDHS are encouraged to attend the open house. Current NDHS students will lead tours, refreshments will be served, and admissions information - including application packets and registration for the High School Placement Test - will be available.

Notre Dame High School admits students of all races, creeds and religions.
