Hennessy Wins Key Labor Endorsement
08/02/06

Mike Hennessy, candidate for state representative for the Fifteenth Essex District, won the endorsement of the state’s top labor union last month.

Leaders of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 400,000 working families in the commonwealth, met last month to consider endorsements for the 2006 election cycle.  Hennessy received his endorsement by unanimous vote of the union’s Executive Council.

Hennessy is one of four candidates vying for the Democratic nomination at the September 19th primary for the seat being vacated by Arthur J. Broadhurst.

Broadhurst is not seeking re-election this fall in order to run for Registrar of Deeds.  The Fifteenth Essex District represents Methuen with the exception of Precinct 7.
“I’m very pleased to receive this endorsement,” said Hennessy, who has a lengthy background of union involvement.

Hennessy, who after 31 years of service recently retired from the Methuen Fire Department, also served as president of the Methuen fire fighters union, as well as a district vice-president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, the state’s fire fighters union.  He was elected to the Methuen City Council twice, serving for six years, completing his tenure as chairman.

“I have devoted much of my life helping to improve the lives of working families,” Hennessy said.  “I am extremely proud to have that acknowledged by this recent endorsement from a group that fights for working people.” If Hennessy wins in the primary election on September 19th, he will face the Republican and Independent candidates at the November 7th general election.
