Marjorie Haggerty was called to active military duty on February 7, 2003 to serve our country and defend it against terrorism. She safely returned home on October 8, 2003. Sgt. Haggerty joined the Lawrence Public Schools, October 15, 1973 as a teacher. In August of 1994 she became an Assistant Principal and is currently at the Oliver School where she supervises and directs personnel assigned to the building. She also assists in the supervision, evaluation and improvement of the instructional program and process. Bienvendio Leonor was born on October 5, 1979 and raised in South Lawrence. Bienvenido attended the Kane Grammar School and Greater Lawrence Technical School where he played on the varsity football team. In July of 1998 he went to basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, graduated in September and went on to Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Bienvendio became a City of Lawrence employee in July 2001 as a hydrant and valve technician and was later deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait with the Bravo Company of 368th . In Kuwait, he was in charge of setting up all of the communications for the company consisting of over 150 soldiers and vehicles and worked security duty for part of the perimeter inside of the camp which supported over 4,000 soldiers. Angel Lopez was born on July 20, 1979 in Pontiac Michigan and moved to Lawrence in 1982. He lived on Prospect Hill, attended the Leonard School and went on to Greater Lawrence Technical School where he was involved in the Peer Leadership Program and was a member of the National Honor Society. In 2000, while Angel was attending Northern Essex Community College on a Presidential Scholarship, he enrolled in the U.S. Army Reserves. He began working for the City of Lawrence, Water Department in October of 2000. In January of 2001 he left for boot camp at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and went on to Advanced Individual Training in Automated Logistics where he graduated with distinction. In February of 2003 after being promoted to Sergeant, he was assigned to active duty with the HSC 368th Engineer Battalion and deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait where he administered security, repaired vehicles, and built roads, camps and housing for soldiers in Iraq. For their service to their country and community, The Valley Patriot honors Marjorie Haggerty, Angel Lopez and Bienvendio Leonor as our Valley Patriots of the Month.
