Methuen Mayor Bill Manzi's
Monthly Newsletter
Welcome to My First Newsletter
I am pleased to be sending my first newsletter as mayor.
I have completed my first hundred days in office, and the
job is both exciting and challenging. It is my hope that
this newsletter will afford me an opportunity to
communicate directly with the citizens of Methuen. In
this newsletter I will give you an overview of some of
the accomplishments and goals of my administration. In
the future, newsletters will likely deal with one or two
subjects.
Economic Development and Planning
With the concurrence of the City Council a reorganization
of the citys Economic and Community Development
Department has been achieved. This reorganization
eliminated one department head position and created a new
director of economic and Community Development. Our goals
are to stimulate economic development and to manage our
growth effectively. We will recommend to the City Council
very shortly a proposal to create a new master plan for
the city. The master plan will be Methuens
blueprint for managing residential and commercial growth
for years into the future. We are fortunate to have hired
Karen Sawyer Faust to lead this department at such a
critical point in Methuens history.
Fire Dept. Reorganization We have submitted and
the City Council approved a reorganization of our Fire
Department. Fire Chief Cliff Gallant wrote the blueprint
for the changes, which I believe will be extremely
helpful to him and the Department in delivering services
more efficiently to our community.
The changes in command structure were achieved with the
cooperation of Firefighters Local 1691, and that
cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Veterans Affairs
In response to many requests from our veterans
community, I have moved the office of our Veterans
Affairs Agent Edward Curran to the first floor of the
Searles Building.
The office is conveniently located within a few feet of
our handicapped entrance, and will afford our veterans
the privacy needed to interact with Agent Curran
comfortably. I am delighted to have been able to make
this change. Please call Edward Curran at 978-983-8584 or
by email at efcurran@ci.methuen.ma.us if you have any questions or concerns on
veterans affairs.
Spring Cleanup
Our annual spring cleanup is scheduled for May 6. Please
join us in helping to beautify our great city by
volunteering to assist. For further details, call Jill
Stackelin at 978-983-8578 or by email at jkstackelin@ci.methuen.ma.us. Link to cleanup information on the
citys website at http://www.ci.methuen.ma.us/Mayor/Assets/CLEANUP FLYER-2006.pdf See you on May 6th.
Methuen High School
We are actively seeking to be eligible for the new School
Building Assistance Program, in order to renovate our
high school.
As we point to the July 2007 reopening of the program,
Methuen is working with our state house delegation,
Treasurer Tim Cahill and his staff, and Superintendent
Phil Littlefield to produce our Statement of Intent form,
which will begin the formal process of applying for state
funding. Future newsletters will keep you informed of
where we stand in this important process.
Internet Development
This newsletter is a small component of our attempt to
make Methuen interactive. We have made changes to our
website and continue to improve and upgrade it. Our goal
is to conduct more of our business online for those who
prefer to do so. Please keep watching our website for
current news and happenings, as well as the introduction
of additional interactivity.
Emergency Management
At the beginning of my term I asked former Senator James
Jajuga to evaluate and make recommendations on the state
of Methuens emergency management system. Senator
Jajuga has filed his report, and we have begun to
implement recommended changes that will improve the state
of Emergency Management in Methuen.
We will report in a future newsletter on some of the
specifics, but for now I am extremely grateful to Senator
Jajuga and Emergency Management Director Dennis Bergeron,
who have worked diligently to improve our ability to
protect the citizens of Methuen in the event of an
emergency.
Please feel free to forward this newsletter. You can
