Lawrence High Teachers on the
Forefront of Math Education

Two Lawrence High School math teachers, Allen Olsen and Joe Bishop, have been featured in recent articles in Mathematics Teachers, a journal published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  Both teachers belong to an ongoing study group for high school teachers as part of the Focus on Math partnership, a project funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and centered at Boston University.

Superintendent of Schools Wilfredo T. Laboy said, “This is a wonderful recognition of the expertise and content knowledge of these two teachers when universities and colleges recognize the great work they are doing They are a prototype of many bright stars we have in Lawrence Public Schools.”

Olsen’s “discovery” is featured in the March, Vol. 99, No.7 issue of the journal, entitled, “How Does One Know if a Number is Divisible by 17?” Bishop’s insight into James Mertz’s “Phone Trees” is featured in the April, Vol. 99, No. 8 issue, entitled “Powers, Representations and Counting.” Olsen is also slated to be published again in the August issue, in an article about divisibility tests.

Donna Chevaire, Lawrence District mathematics principal, presented at the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics in St. Louis on April 24 and was joined by Kyung Yoon, a visiting professor at Boston University from Korea.  Professor Yoon was so impressed by the work of the Focus on Math Curriculum Committee and the Lawrence High School Focus on Math study groups that she has asked to attend all meetings until the end of the academic year.
