Memories, Mothers & Boy Scouts
Jim Cassidy

As we move into the beautiful month of May, we seniors are happy to have survived another harsh New England winter.  We now look forward to spring with warming temperatures and Nature’s beauty bursting forth with the sights, sounds and smells of the opening of Mother Earth and all her promises.

There is so much to see, so much to do, so little time, but then we take a deep, fresh-air breath, step back and focus on a few important moments in May.

As we look forward to Memorial Day, we first think of Mother’s Day and that special woman we honor on that day.  Our first love who taught us the values of life and how to be good and caring for others — we still miss you, mom.

And, of course, Memorial Day brings us to the day we veterans of long past wars remember the young soldiers of today, as well as our own fallen comrades who lie in peaceful final slumber.

As we approach this very important and solemn day, veterans everywhere are on record as supporting the ideals and the oath of the Boy Scouts of America. We point this out because of the recent outrageous actions of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and their assault on the Boy Scouts. This persecution by the ACLU is symptomatic of a larger action against faith and its place in society. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, wonderful All-American organizations, and their younger Cubs and Brownies, are always ready to assist in performing their good deeds and civic duties anyway they can.

On Memorial Day and every day the Scouts help the Veterans organizations. They participate in parades and ceremonies to honor and remember our fallen comrades. We depend on the Boy Scouts of America to help us in our annual task of placing thousands of American flags — the symbols the fallen have fought for — on the grave sites of everyone of our heroes from the Revolutionary War to the present time.

We in the American Legion and the Boy Scouts of America adhere to and have the same oath: “For God and Country.”

But did you know that the radical ACLU has a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America and wants the Scouts removed from public places because the Scout oath refers to a higher power? — namely, GOD! This oath, the Boy Scouts of America will not change, nor will the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, nor the vast majority of Americans.

The ACLU was once a reasonable organization concerned with discrimination of the races, but now it has crossed the line and become the advanced guard of secular totalitarianism in America that is attempting to take God out of the classroom, removed from public buildings, removed from the oath of offices, off our currency and out of our Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. It cites freedoms in the First Amendment, but it is dead wrong and eventually America will demand the courts say so.

Organizations like the Boy Scouts of America help make this one nation of ours - this nation under God - a little more indivisible.  The ACLU moves us a step toward erasing those values, even pressuring the military. And when you are fighting a war as we are today, sometimes faith is all that you have.

May God bless all our mothers, our troops, the Boy Scouts, and may God continue to bless America.
