The Oral Health Task Force has published a misleading piece of propaganda on the mythical benefits, imaginary safety and imaginary economics of water fluoridation. This propaganda claims that Representative Kathleen M. Teahan of the 7th Plymouth District will introduce legislation that will mandate water fluoridation for the entire state. I am pleading with all Massachusetts voters to contact their State Representatives and ask them to oppose this terrible bill for the following reasons: In my more than three decades of research at MIT and the Gloucester Technological Laboratory (a federal research facility), I have never seen a more unscientific, unethical, detrimental scheme than the one propagating that a cumulative poison such as fluoride should be added to public water supplies for the purpose of preventing tooth decay. 1. First of all, it is a principle of public health that nothing should be added to a drinking water supply except for the safety of drinking the water. This principle is the basis for Section 1412(b)(11) of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Accordingly, water fluoridation is in direct violation of basic health principles and the Safe Drinking Water Act. 2. It’s a principle of public heath that no poison be added to any element of the food chain (water is an element of the food chain). This principle is the basis for Section 402 and other sections of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Accordingly, water fluoridation is in direct violation of the basic health principles of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. 3. One might wonder how it is that public health and food safety laws can be violated without penalty. The answer is simple: the U.S. Government funds and supports fluoridation, which could not be done under the FDA. The FDA has jurisdiction over water safety. So, the Government simply took that jurisdiction away from the FDA and created the EPA, which established its own protocol for water safety. 4. The most detrimental and unethical aspect of water fluoridation is that it takes away the right of the freedom of choice and the right to decide on which medication to take. We should never give up that right! Thousands of Americans have died in battle to preserve our rights. Moreover, water fluoridation is an uncontrolled medication, which contradicts the logic behind medical prescriptions. And it contradicts the three ethical standards adopted by the American Medical Association and is in violation of the ten rules that governed the Nuremberg War Criminal Trials. 5. The claim, by any of the water fluori-dation proponents that fluoride magically prevents tooth decay, has no scientific proof, as most of the world’s scientists will agree. Among those who oppose water fluoridation are the hundreds of EPA scien-tists who are the elite of water scientists. In fact, there is no scientific basis for any health benefits by any cumulative poisons (including fluoride) as any toxicologist will agree. Unfortunately, the EPA does not agree with its own scientists. 6. The claim that water fluoridation is safe is wishful thinking. The FDA does not consider fluoride to be a safe food additive and it has mandated the warning of poison on all toothpaste and tooth treatments that contain fluoride. 7. The claim that fluoride is an essential nutrient is a pure pipe dream. It is axiomatic that essential nutrients provide vital benefits, cause no harm and do not accumulate in the body, while cumulative toxins do not provide any nutritional benefit, are known to cause physical harm or even death, and do accumulate in the body. 8. The claim that water fluoridation is a scientific breakthrough and compares with chlorination, pasteurization and immunization is absolutely unworthy of discussion. 9. Fluoride is a cumulative enzyme poison which takes decades to reach a critical level in the body, whereupon it will cause physiological havoc. One drink of fluoridated water (like one cigarette) causes little harm, but 30 to 40 years of ingesting fluoride, like smoking cigarettes for 30 to 40 years, could take a horrendous medical toll. 10. As for the economics of water fluoridation, a strict economic analysis will easily show that less than 0.1% of the fluoride that is added to drinking water actually reaches human teeth. Also, no practical mathematical model has ever been produced to show the economic advantage of administering fluoride via public water supplies. It cannot be done. It should be noted
that most of those who promote fluoride, despite their
big titles and offices, were either not trained in logic,
ethics, toxicology, enzymology, food safety, FDA
protocol, nutrition, and public health, or if they had
such training, the truth of that training has been
sidelined by some unexplainable
