I bring both bad news and a message of hope. First, the bad news: … Our village is in trouble. Jack Watkins told us, … “The wolves are at the door.” But Jack was wrong. The wolves are not at the door … they are in the house. For decades we have fed them and tried to buy their favor … but each time we feed them … they get bigger and stronger. Some of our community leaders are calling for a Proposition 2 ½ Override. They plead: “We need more money to feed the wolves!” … But we all know what happens when we give the wolves more food. I have been accused of being against an override. This is very unfair! As I said, I am here to provide a message of hope … so I come before you to announce that I, too, am in favor of overrides …… not one, but three. First: I would override the laws that prohibit public moneys going to private educational institutions. I would put the approximately $9 BILLION we spend each year in Massachusetts on public education where it belongs … in the hands of our children and their parents … in the form of Vouchers or Education Stamps. Let’s give power to the people! Second: I would override the laws that require municipalities to engage in compulsory bargaining with monopoly unions. Free our towns to buy the best services at the best prices. Give our children the best educational opportunities that money can buy. Let our people go! Third: I would override the laws that make our regular education students second-class citizens. Under current laws we must fund 100% of the needs of Special Education students, and then whatever is left over can be used for our second-class students. Let’s ensure equal rights for all our children! So, how many of you will join me in support of these overrides? … to save our community … and to improve educational opportunities for our children? Let me conclude by saying that Jack Watkins wasn’t willing to name the wolves … but I just did. Thank you for your warm reception. Just remember: If you are for overrides … VOTE FOR ORMSBY!
