New citizens take oath aboard Old Ironsides
As they waved miniature American flags to the rhythm, the new US citizens began to join in, timidly at first, until by the end a full chorus born in Laos and Lebanon, in Syria, Switzerland and 16 other nations finished the final refrain: "God bless America, my home sweet home."

Howie Carr Reads The Valley Patriot....Shouldn't You???

Howie Carr tackles the shanigans of Grisel Silva and Lawrence politics, and of course mentions the Valley Patriot as a news source while taking a moment to compare Tom Duggan's "scandal" as a member of the school committee ten years ago as "funny" by the standards of Lawrence politics, to more egregious scandals where elected officials have actually broken the law and claimed to be "role models of the community." At left, Howie Carr gleefully holds last year's Valley Patriot where Grisel Silva was cleared by the ethics commission on gun charges. Story Here (New nominees for Lawrence Hall of Shame: Ethics-wise, 2008 is shaping up as a banner year for the city of Lawrence. In the eight months since last November’s municipal elections, only 20 percent of the 15 victorious politicians have been arrested....

Tribune Corporate Bigwigs continue to fly in from Alabama on a regular basis, Rumors of sale fly through the industry
Corporate bigwigs have flown in from Alabama again this week and are holding high level meetings on the future of the newspaper on Turnpike Street say industry insiders. Airport records show the corporate jet owned by the Tribune's parent company has made frequent trips to North Andover and the frequency of those trips has increased in previous months. Last week the Boston Herald announced that it had to layoff dozens of employees and will begin to outsource its' printing to a private company. The New York Times and the Boston Globe have posted record losses and one Trib employee told the Valley Patriot that The Trib "as an organization cannot survive with such financial losses."

Councilor Silva Arraigned: "I am EEEnnocent"
Lawrence City Councilor Grisel Silva was arraigned in Lawrence District Court this morning on charges she committed assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property and driving to endanger after ramming a car containing her estranged husband and his girlfriend last night. Silva was ordered to stay away from her husband and his girlfriend and was released on her own recognizance. Silva sat quietly in the courtroom throughout the morning with former city councilor Barbara Gonzalez who said she was there "for moral support." Silva was also flanked by her daughter and a member of her husband's family. Silva shielded her face from reporters throughout the morning. When called to the stand by Judge Brennan she was asked to enter a plea of "guilty or not guilty," Silva claimed "I am innocent." Silva also said he attorney was Lawrence funeral director Louis Farrah whom she claimed she was waiting for but Farrah never appeared in court and Silva was arraigned without him an hour later. More coming.....

Fresh out of FBI Citizens Police Academy, City Councilor Grisel Silva Arrested on Three Felonies
Lawrence City Councilor Grisel Silva was arrested last night and held without bail for assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of personal property over $250 and driving to endanger. She was arraigned this morning in Lawrence District Court at 9AM. Silva's arrest came after she allegedly stalked her estranged husband and then rammed his car after catching him with his (reportedly pregnant) girlfriend. Silva then fled the scene. Councilor Silva, who was recently hailed as a graduate of the FBI Citizens Police Academy, was rushed to the hospital two months ago after swallowing a gaggle of sleeping pills and being rushed to the hospital. Silva, who has been hostile to the Lawrence Police during public meeting since being elected three years ago and has declared war on the department by advocating cutting their budget said last year she was a "role model for the people of my district".

Car thief jumps off Duck Bridge to evade police, then has to be rescued
Car thieves led police on a high speed chase around 10pm Friday night beginning near Merrimack Street in Methuen, and into Lawrence where State, Lawrence and Methuen Police finally cornered him on the Duct Bridge between Union and South Street. That's when police say he jumped off the bridge into the Merrimack River and began to swim. "he kept trying to swim from one side to the other," one officer on the scene said. A State Police helicopter circled the area at very low altitude as ambulances and police cruisers lined both the north and south sided of the riverbank waiting for the suspect to emerge from the water. "Then he started to lose it and began calling for help," one officer continued. "Officer Dube jumped into the river and brought him to safety." Police say during the chase they inadvertently caught another car thief while surrounding the stolen jeep on the bridge. An ambulance brought the jumper to the Lawrence General Hospital and arrested the other. More on Paying Attention! on 980AM WCAP, Saturday from 11-2pm.
